About George Nakashima
George Nakashima (1905–1990) was an influential American woodworker, furniture designer, and architect of Japanese descent. Born in Spokane, Washington, he studied architecture at the University of Washington (Bachelor's) and MIT (Master's). After working and traveling in Japan and India, he settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania in 1943, where he established his studio.
Deeply influenced by traditional Japanese craftsmanship and his experiences during World War II internment, Nakashima developed a philosophy that honored the "soul" of each tree—often preserving live edges, natural figuring, and organic forms. While celebrated for his one-of-a-kind studio pieces, the Origins Collection for Widdicomb brought his approach to a broader audience through refined, production-ready designs using premium woods and understated elegance. In 1983, he received Japan's Order of the Sacred Treasure. His studio continues today under the direction of his daughter, Mira Nakashima.
