Restored, Not Refinished to Death: What Restoration Means at East Coast MCM

We specialize in restoring vintage mid-century modern furniture while preserving its original materials and craftsmanship. That sentence is the whole philosophy — but it is worth unpacking, because “restored” can mean very different things depending on who is selling.

Preserving what makes the piece original

Restoration at East Coast MCM means bringing a piece back to a condition where it is ready for your home, without stripping away what makes it original. Original materials and craftsmanship stay. A refinished top, a repaired joint, a cleaned and revived finish — done so the piece reads as itself, not as a reproduction.

What that looks like in practice

Our Ward six-drawer dresser is listed as fully restored. Our Knoll floating-top table by Lewis Butler has a restored top, in excellent condition. Our Milo Baughman sofa for Thayer Coggin retains its original manufacturer’s tag in place. Those details are stated on each listing because they are part of what you are buying.

Honest condition notes

Restored does not mean perfect, and we do not pretend otherwise. Listings note wear where it exists — a small chip at a rim, a spot where glaze was missed, patina on brass — so you know exactly what is arriving. Vintage pieces carry their history; the job of restoration is to make that history presentable, not to erase it.

Questions about a specific piece?

Every piece is one of a kind, and restoration varies by item. If you want to know what was done to a particular piece before you buy, contact us and ask. We also offer restoration services for pieces of your own.
