Gaetano Sciolari (1927–1994) was one of Italy's great lighting designers — the man behind the chrome-and-glass fixtures that made 1970s glamour feel geometric. If you have ever walked into a room and stopped at the chandelier, there is a good chance it was a Sciolari, or one of his many imitators.
From Stilnovo to Lightolier
Sciolari became the in-house designer for Stilnovo, the Milan lighting manufacturer, in the 1950s, and went on to design futuristic Space Age chandeliers, ceiling lamps, and pendants that broke with the conventions of the time. His work drew on Art Deco and brutalist influences, but the signature is unmistakable: pronounced geometry, polished chrome tubes, and glass used as sculpture.
For the American market, his designs were manufactured and distributed by Lightolier, one of the leading names in architectural lighting in the United States — which is why so many Sciolari fixtures found in American homes carry the Lightolier name.
What makes a Sciolari fixture
Look for geometry first. Sciolari's best-known designs are built from repeated forms: square chrome beams, round glass shades, and the famous "Ice Cube" chandeliers, whose thick, weighty glass cubes house the bulbs and look beautiful even with the lights off. His fixtures are eye-catching by construction — chrome and glass arranged with mathematical confidence — rather than by ornament.
That geometry is also what makes his work so collectible today. A Sciolari fixture does not blend into a ceiling; it organizes the room around it, and it pairs naturally with the walnut, teak, and leather of mid-century interiors.
The Sciolari light at East Coast MCM
Our current Sciolari piece is a chrome flush-mount ceiling light made for Lightolier — a geometric fixture in the designer's signature polished chrome. It has been professionally restored and, like everything we carry, is one of a kind.
When shopping for Sciolari lighting, check for the hallmarks: chrome construction, geometric glass or acrylic shades, and, on American-market pieces, Lightolier distribution. Original condition and working order matter as much as the design itself with vintage lighting.
